Context

On June 16, 2020, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (PNU) launched the implementation of a cross-border project to obtain and disseminate knowledge about health - a program to prevent obesity and diabetes among the population of the border regions of Romania and Ukraine.

The Ukrainian project team was composed of specialists from the Precarpathian National University and the Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University.

Project goal

On June 16, 2020, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (PNU) launched the implementation of a cross-border project to obtain and disseminate knowledge about health - a program to prevent obesity and diabetes among the population of the border regions of Romania and Ukraine.

Project objectives

Screening adults and children to identify risks of overweight, obesity or diabetes and providing integrative individualized prevention tools.

Assessing the current medical practices of family physicians and training primary care providers in preventive approaches and effective nutrition counseling.

Intensification of cooperation between Romanian and Ukrainian healthcare professionals - scientific understanding of the situation, joint science-based solutions, exchange visits and trainings for teachers, staff and students.

Direct target groups

  • Urban and rural adult and school-age population of Suceava county and Ivano-Frankivsk region with risk or presence of obesity and diabetes

  • Family health workers — involved in nutritional counseling in primary care settings

Indirect target groups

  • Teachers and researchers from both universities

  • Technical personnel involved in the project implementation

  • Students participating in exchange programs and trainings
